eBooks: Smartphone/Tablet

Basic Information

  • Each cardholder can download up to 3 titles per week with Freading.  Any unused downloads will roll over to the next week, for a total period of 4 weeks, before the downloads reset.  Cardholders can have a maximum of 12 unused downloads at any given time.
  • Multiple people can read the same eBook at the same time on Freading, so there's never any wait to read the book you want!
  • All eBooks are free to download.
  • Each eBook can be renewed once for an additional 2 weeks.
  • Titles are automatically returned at the end of the borrowing period, so there are no late fees for any digital materials!
  • eBooks can only be downloaded by patrons with a Waukegan Public Library card in good standing (unexpired, fines less than $10).
  • eBooks and other digital materials cannot be checked out or requested from other libraries.

Not a Waukegan card holder?

You need an active Waukegan Public Library card to download digital materials. If you live in Waukegan and don’t have a library card, get one! If you live outside Waukegan, try contacting your home library to learn about their eBook collection.

Device Compatibility

Freading is incompatible with certain devices, including Nook, Kindle, and Google Chrome.  For a more complete list of compatible devices, visit the Freading FAQ page.

Freading

1. Download Freading app.

Open the app store and download the Freading app.

2. Create Adobe ID.

When the app opens, you will be prompted to enter your Adobe ID. If you don't have an Adobe ID, tap Create a Free Adobe ID and enter the required information. Tap Back once the ID has been successfully created.

3. Get books.

Tap Get Books at the bottom of the home screen to visit the library's Freading catalog.

4. Search for a book.

Find a book by searching for a specific author, title, or keyword, or browse by category. Tap the menu button in the top left corner to view the categories.

5. Log in to download.

Tap the cover of the book you'd like to read, then tap Login to Download. Search for the library by name, then tap Find Library.  Enter your library card number when prompted.

6. Select a format.

Tap Download EPUB.  When the download is complete, you can choose to Read Now or Read Later, if you want to continue browsing.

7. Option: Download as PDF

PDF books can be downloaded in the same way as EPUB titles.
